A GAME OF SCONES
I live in Maine where we’ve been getting an abundance of snow… Basically, a snowstorm every couple of days. In between all of this insane shoveling and toning of my shoulders and arms, I’ve been inspired to do more baking, especially literary themed baking. And, yes, I have been itching to do this particular idea for a few weeks now.
I found a killer recipe for Orange and Cranberry Scones on Pinterest that looked phenomenal. Since I’ve taken an interest in George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones book series as of late, I knew that these two things just had to be combined. And so began the epic quest to create and document my experience in the kitchen. While these scones would normally only take 20-30 minutes to make, it took me close to an hour and a half with the filming included. It took me another 3.5 hours to upload, cut, edit, and set music to the whole thing. But, it was all worth it.
I found the recipe for these scones at Tasty Kitchen. Here’s a break down of what goes into these beauties:
2 cups of All-Purpose Flour
7 tsp. Granulated Sugar
2 tsp. Baking Powder
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/3 tsp. Baking Soda
2 tbsp. Grated Orange Peel
1/3 cup (5 1/2 tbsp.) Cold Butter
1 cup Dried Cranberries
1/4 cup Orange Juice
1/4 cup of Half-and-Half Cream
1 tbsp. Milk
Directions: Stir flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda together in a large bowl. Stir in grated orange peel. Cut in 1/3 cup of cold butter (adding it by tbsp helps) until the mixture “resembles course crumbs”.
In a smaller bowl, add orange juice, egg, half-and-half, and dried cranberries together and stir until everything is well mixed. Add this to the dry ingredients and stir until a soft dough forms. (Sometimes kneeding the dough with your hands helps to distribute everything.)
Place dough on a floured surface and kneed. Form dough into an 8 inch circle. Divide into as small or as large a portion as you’d like. I ended up cutting mine into quarters for big scones. (I like big scones, and I cannot lie.) Place those scones on an ungreased baking sheet. Brush scones with milk and sprinkle sugar on tops. Set oven to 400 and bake for 15 minutes or until scones are golden-colored.
To make a glaze for them (which freaking ROCKS), mix powdered sugar and a little orange juice in a bowl. Spoon this on top of the scones when they come out of the oven. It seriously makes them magical.
And now, you won’t have to fight off hoards of White Walkers on an empty stomach!
